As part of Torbay's commitment to young people, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Youth Homeless Prevention Worker. This role has a central part to play in the overall Early Help offer to young people by delivering interventions and activities that contribute towards preventing young people from becoming homeless.

The role will involve working closely with young people aged 16 plus and housing providers when homelessness is identified as a risk. The Youth Homeless Prevention Worker will also work with a number of key agencies to ensure a joined-up approach is taken to meeting young people's needs in a holistic manner. The Youth Homeless Prevention Worker will also support with the development of the service by designing and delivering a number of preventative programmes aimed at reducing the risk of young people experiencing homelessness. To succeed in this role, you will need to be a calm, dynamic and systematic worker who is able to develop and maintain relationships with young people and professionals from partner agencies. You must be a good communicator and be able to work under pressure in order to ensure good outcomes for young people. A creative and resourceful approach to problem solving is also a key trait needed within this role.

It is essential that any applicant has a good knowledge of homelessness issues and housing issues along with knowledge of the key challenges that young people, including care experienced adults, face as they transition into adulthood. A comprehensive understanding of child and adult safeguarding mechanisms is also essential. Therefore, previous experience of working with cared for children and young people and/or care experienced adults along with experience of housing work is considered essential requirements of applicants. Applicants must be educated to A level standard or equivalent.

The Youth Homeless Prevention Service is positioned within the Early Help area of Children's Social Care. The Early Help Service is a stable set of teams consisting of practitioners working across a number of disciplines and delivering various outcome focused interventions. The service works closely with partner agencies and is committed to community engagement and development by forming positive relationships with children, young people and their families.

This post meets the requirements for an Enhanced Criminal Record Check. This will show spent and unspent convictions and adult cautions which have not been filtered in line with legislation, plus any information held by local Police that is considered relevant to the role.

This position is for a fixed term of 5 months from the start date.

Essential:
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations in a calm and sympathetic nature.

  • Ability to challenge other agencies and hold to account.
This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.

Knowledge

Essential:
  • Awareness of Homelessness issues.
  • Knowledge of Housing issues.
  • Knowledge and awareness of issues facing young people with complex needs.
  • Awareness of Child Protection procedures.
Experience & Qualifications

Essential:
  • Previous experience of working with Young People.
  • Experience of giving housing advice.
