Homeless Support Worker

Associate Psychologist - NHSE Homeless Sector Project The Clinical Psychology programme team is looking to employ a Clinical Associate, from February 2026 until September 2027. During this period, you will be contracted to work 900 hours (working pattern to be agreed in discussion with the research team) to support the development of our work within the homeless sector. With support from South-East NHS England, the Surrey PsychD programme has been working on an innovative project over the past two years to develop homelessness placements for trainees, and to embed housing and homelessness as a priority agenda within the PsychD programme. The project seeks to expand the psychological workforce within the homelessness sector, and to generate ways of working between the third sector and the NHS. Building on the success of the project to date, we are now seeking an Associate with experience of working in the homelessness sector, or a similar field, to support the continued development of these placements and the longevity of the project. This post will form a crucial role in building strategic relationships with local third sector organisations across Surrey and Sussex, and with our partner NHS Trusts' housing initiatives. The post holder will be expected to develop and coordinate trainee placements, generate new ways to assess trainee competencies within these organisations, and support trainees undertaking these roles. There will also be a requirement to support supervisors in the region, and to work with organisational leads to provide overall structure to the placements. Research Assistant Working Collaboratively with the Homeless Sector The clinical psychology programme team is looking to employ a full time Research Assistant from March 2026 to September 2027 to support the development of our work within the Homeless sector. This post is crucial to the programme being able to build the evidence of the impact of providing training placements for clinical psychologists within the sector. Until very recently there was limited training opportunities to work in this sector owing to the barriers of supervision and placement expectations. Over the last two year we have piloted a new approach which NHSE have supported. They have provided further financial commitment for to enable us to extend the project and explore how best to evaluate the direct and indirect benefits of the project. I-SPHERE is among the UK's top social and housing policy research centres, recognised with a Queen's Anniversary Prize for excellence, innovation and public benefit. This internship is part of the Homelessness Prevention in the UK research programme. This major UK-wide programme, which is made possible thanks to the support of Oak Foundation, aims to deliver cross-sectoral research and capacity building on homelessness prevention, and facilitate policy and practice mobility across the four UK jurisdictions. Our philosophy is simple. If we can support the individuals who have the most challenging circumstances to remain safely and happily in housing, then we will make significant strides in system change to help reduce the risks of homelessness for everyone. Our Approach 1. Helping People with Multiple Overlapping Unmet Needs (MOUN) - who need support right now (immediate need/ turning off the tap) 2. Putting mechanisms in place to support connectivity across services so that we can evidence the effectiveness of early intervention so multiple needs do not overlap/become 'complex' (evidence for systems change) 3. This proposal requests that this service be awarded funding to allow it to become a more visible function within the wider homelessness service provision for people who use substances and are homeless or vulnerably housed.
