Chair, Building Safety Regulator

Term: up to three years

Remuneration and time commitment: £104,364 per annum, with an expected commitment of around 12 days per month (156 days per annum).

Location: The role is primarily virtual, with travel across the UK required.

The Building Safety Regulator (BSR) is seeking an exceptional individual to serve as its inaugural permanent Chair, providing strategic leadership at a pivotal moment in the transformation of building safety across England. Established as an independent arm’s-length body of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the BSR sits at the heart of the Government’s building safety reforms and is responsible for overseeing higher-risk buildings, driving improvements in standards, competence and culture, and ensuring residents remain central to the safety system.

This is a unique opportunity to lead the Board of a nationally significant regulator as it continues its evolution following its transition to a standalone organisation in 2026. As Chair, you will provide strategic direction, oversee governance and performance, and support and challenge the Chief Executive and executive team to deliver the regulator’s ambitious objectives. You will also act as a key ambassador for the organisation, building trusted relationships with government, industry, regulators, residents and other stakeholders while championing transparency, accountability and public confidence.

We are looking for a proven senior leader with experience of leading complex organisations through change and improvement. You will bring a deep understanding of board governance, excellent judgement, and the ability to operate effectively within a high-profile public policy environment. Strong stakeholder engagement skills are essential, alongside experience of, or familiarity with, regulatory environments. Experience within public safety, housing, construction, the built environment or other safety-critical sectors would be particularly valuable.
