Director of Housing Needs | salary from £119,514 to £144,249

Are you ready to take on one of the most challenging and rewarding roles in housing services? Newham Council is seeking a dynamic and driven individual to join us as the Director of Housing Needs. As we restructure our housing team to meet the challenges in our borough, this is a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on the lives of our residents and help shape the future of housing in Newham.

Newham has the highest rate of households in temporary accommodation in the country. This role is not for the faint-hearted, but for those who see challenges as opportunities to make a real difference. As the Director of Housing Needs, you will be at the forefront of our efforts to tackle homelessness and ensure that everyone has access to timely and good quality housing.

You will lead a large, stable, multi-disciplinary team and a significant and complex budget. Your responsibilities will include overseeing our established prevention programme and implementing our homelessness strategy - we know what we need to do, we need you to lead our team in delivering our plans. In this role you will also lead our with the private rented sector in relation to both licensing and enforcement, and work in partnership with partners and stakeholders to ensure the standards and safety across the borough are at the highest level.

This is a collaborative role at the heart of our council that will lead a cross-department approach to homelessness, bringing creativity and innovative thought into how we deliver our services. Prudent financial management will ensure we manage our costs whilst delivering the best outcomes for residents possible.

We are looking for someone that can bring impact and outcomes. With a career in housing, you will be able to demonstrable show how your experience to date can deliver results at scale, in a borough like Newham. Beyond technical expertise, we are looking for someone to bring energy, enthusiasm, passion, and creativity into this role.

Collaboration, partnership working and negotiating with stakeholders, both internal and external, will all be second nature to you. We are looking for someone that has experience of managing large multi-disciplinary housing teams and complex budgets.

This is a newly elevated role as part of the new housing structure in the council, and we are looking for someone who is ready to take on this challenge and drive forward our ambitious plans.

About Us

The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country.
