Housing/Public Health Enforcement Officer

Join our team and help improve housing conditions and protect public health in Croydon

Croydon is a vibrant and diverse borough with a strong sense of community and a growing private rented sector. At Croydon Council, we're working hard to make homes safe, healthy, and decent - for everyone who lives here.

We are looking for a proactive and skilled Housing/Public Health Enforcement Officer to join our Environmental Health team. In this vital role, you'll carry out inspections of housing and public spaces, tackle poor housing conditions, enforce public health standards, and ensure safe and healthy homes for our residents.

You'll work with landlords, tenants, contractors, and partner agencies to resolve complaints, take enforcement action where necessary, and provide expert advice on housing and public health issues.

Key responsibilities:
  • Inspecting properties to assess housing conditions, hazards, and statutory nuisances.
  • Using the Housing Health & Safety Rating System (HHSRS) and other legislation to enforce standards.
  • Investigating and resolving complaints about housing, drainage, pests, and public health concerns.
  • Preparing and serving statutory notices, managing default works, and progressing enforcement actions.
  • Working collaboratively with internal colleagues, contractors, and external agencies to achieve positive outcomes.
About you:
  • Experienced in housing, environmental health, building construction, drainage, or pest control.
  • Knowledgeable about housing and public health legislation, enforcement procedures, and court processes.
  • A confident communicator, able to advise and negotiate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Able to manage a varied caseload, make independent decisions, and work under pressure.
  • Comfortable entering confined spaces and inspecting all areas of a property, including using ladders and CCTV equipment.
  • A relevant qualification in environmental health, building and/or drainage (eg BTech) or experience of working in a relevant field
  • Good IT skills and the ability to keep accurate records
