We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate Housing Support Officer to join our team at the Tara Park Gypsy and Traveller Site. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of residents and contribute to a positive and supportive community environment.
About the Role
As a Housing Support Officer, you will play a key role in delivering essential services to residents at the Tara Park site. Your work will ensure that residents have access to housing-related support, as well as broader services to improve their wellbeing. You will work closely with the Housing Officer to develop tailored support plans, assist with Universal Credit and housing benefit applications, and support residents in engaging with external agencies.

Key Responsibilities:
- Provide high-quality support services to residents, ensuring access to essential services such as housing benefits, healthcare, employment, and training opportunities.
- Work with the Housing Officer to help residents understand the requirements of living on the site and support them in maintaining their pitch.
- Assist residents in applying for Universal Credit, maintaining their journals, and managing housing-related payments and arrears.
- Coordinate with external agencies (e.g., charities, health services, and social care) to support residents' needs and facilitate access to vital services.
- Promote a strong community ethos, encouraging residents to participate in community activities and engage in voluntary work.
- Recognise safeguarding concerns and ensure appropriate action is taken in line with the Council's safeguarding policy.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records and submit intelligence to relevant authorities when necessary.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with residents and external agencies.
- Ability to build and maintain relationships.
- Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and relevant procedures.
- Experience of supporting individuals to maintain accommodation, particularly in a social housing or outreach setting.
- Basic understanding of welfare benefits, including Universal Credit and housing benefits.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads.
- Emotional resilience and the ability to handle challenging situations with professionalism.
- Knowledge of the Gypsy and Traveller community and the specific challenges faced by residents.
- Experience working with disadvantaged or vulnerable individuals.
- Knowledge of local housing systems and services in Ryedale and surrounding areas.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks without direct supervision.
