Would you like an exciting opportunity to become part of our dynamic and positive private sector housing team dedicated to raising standards for our residents in private rented accommodation? Do you like variety in what you do and want to make a difference? If so come and work in the beautiful East Riding of Yorkshire working from our coastal town of Bridlington. We are an ambitious and forward-thinking Council, committed to making the East Riding a better place to live and work, enabling communities and businesses to thrive whilst protecting our residents.
In this Officer role you will be responsible for improving housing standards, making a real difference to the quality and security of tenants lives and wellbeing through inspecting housing defects, undertaking comprehensive risk assessments of hazards and taking appropriate remedial action through investigation, engagement and enforcement. You will also deal with investigations into potential illegal eviction cases and regularly consult with the fire authority on safe fire and evacuation measures in licensed houses in multiple occupation and other residential properties.
Ideally, we are looking for an experienced enforcement officer with an in depth knowledge of relevant legislation relating to housing and environmental health and a good understanding of building construction and housing defects. You should hold a relevant degree or diploma in environmental health, housing, enforcement or building control subject at level 6 or above. However, we can provide some flexibility for the right person with the necessary experience and knowledge and willingness to undertake further training and qualifications.
You must be capable of establishing good relationships with tenants, landlords, managing agents, contractors, Humberside fire authority and other council officers as well as having effective communication and negotiation skills. You will be authorised to undertake a range of enforcement actions and where necessary you will be required to present evidence in court. You should have a flexible approach and positive 'can do' attitude.
You will get the chance to work on a wide range of private sector housing topics from HMO's to HHSRS, empty homes and housing projects. on the job training and support means you will develop personally and professionally.
You will provide advice to landlords and tenants to maintain and improve housing standards and will often be dealing with vulnerable people in their homes and supporting them with other agencies to resolve their unsafe or unhealthy living conditions. Experience assessing properties using the housing health and safety rating system and preparing schedules of work would be an advantage. You should be customer focused, with a practical mind and enjoy working within a small team of people delivering a wide range of housing activities. The successful candidate will expect to use their own car to travel across the East Riding, a casual car allowance is payable, and you should have a full driving licence.
