Job summary

Band 6 Specialist Homelessness Podiatrist

We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and innovative podiatrist to work within our Specialist Podiatry Service in Tower Hamlets.

The Band 6 Homelessness Podiatrist will deliverspecialist podiatry care to individuals that reside in Tower Hamlets as well as individuals experiencing homelessness, targeting a highly vulnerable and hard-to-reach population within Tower Hamlets.

The role focuses on:
  • Early intervention
  • Prevention of foot complications
  • Management of acute and high-risk foot conditions
  • Facilitating access into mainstream podiatry and wider healthcare services
This post plays a critical role in reducing health inequalities, preventing avoidable hospital admissions, and acting as a gateway into healthcare services for a marginalised cohort.

You will also be involved daily in our Emergency Clinic at 8:30am Monday-Friday which provides Gold standard active wound care

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Delivery
  • Provide podiatric assessment and treatmentwithin:
    • Hostels
    • Temporary accommodation
    • Outreach/community settings
  • Manage:
    • High-risk foot conditions
    • Soft tissue lesions and infections
    • Diabetic foot complications (in line with service scope)
  • Identify and escalate:
    • Red flag conditions
    • Suspected infection, ischaemia, or tissue loss
Outreach & Engagement
  • Deliver proactive outreach clinicsto improve access for individuals who do not engage with traditional services
  • Build relationships with:
    • Hostel staff
    • Support workers
    • Voluntary sector organisations
  • Encourage uptake of podiatry and wider health services
Health Promotion & Prevention
  • Provide foot health educationtailored to the homelessness population
  • Promote:
    • Basic foot care
    • Footwear advice
    • Early help-seeking behaviours
  • Support prevention of conditions such as:
    • Trench foot
    • Infection
    • Ulceration

Essential

  • BSc (Pod) or equivalent
  • One year's post graduate work experience
  • Current Registration with HCPC
Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification
  • Current UK Driving license
Experience

Essential

  • Appropriate post graduate work experience including high risk patients and diabetics/ willing to work towards it
  • Experience of clinics with patients presenting with complex and varied pathologies.
  • Creating and following treatment plans including onward referrals and liaise with other professional for health of the patient.
Desirable

  • Experience with managing stock within a set budget.
Knowledge and Skills

Essential

  • Advanced hands on experience in treatment of high risk patients
  • To ensure continued maintenance of equipment and machinery and identify and report any equipment needs.
  • To ensure that pharmacy stocks are stored in accordance with COSHH guidelines.
  • To manage a week-to-week domiciliary caseload and implement effective administration in accordance to department guidelines on domiciliary caseload management.
  • To be responsible for the development, communication and implementation of a specialized individual treatment plan. Obtaining patient consent for surgical intervention and treatment as required. Staff will be required to re-assure; educate and negotiate potentially complex treatment options where denial of pathology or compliance with treatment may be an issue, overcoming communication barriers. appreciating relevant cultural factors and making reference to senior colleagues as necessary
  • To work effectively as a part of a multidisciplinary team and independently as required in primary and secondary care settings to include; hospital clinics, ward rounds, health center community clinics, GP practice clinics, residential homes for the elderly, patient's homes and Mental Health units. Some of these may be in isolation, requiring autonomous practice guided by dept. policy
