Supported Exempt Housing Officer

Fixed Term Contract/ Secondment - 6 months with possible extension to 12 months

Grade 4 - £33,366 - £40,476

Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review

Working 36.5 hours per week

Since 2020, Birmingham City Council been raising standards within the supported exempt housing sector. Through grant funding and a unique multi-disciplinary partnership approach, we effectively respond to complex neighbourhood concerns, improving property conditions, tackling anti-social behaviour, assessing support standards, and addressing planning breaches. To date we have saved £8.4m in what would have been overpaid enhanced housing benefit.

With further Supported Housing Improvement Programme (SHIP) funding secured through to March 2026, we are now recruiting for a number of exciting secondment opportunities

About the Role:

We're looking for passionate, motivated professionals with experience in inspecting houses in multiple occupation with a strong understanding of housing standards. Experience with the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) is a distinct advantage, however, if you're a fast learner with the drive to develop new skills, we'd love to hear from you.

This is a dynamic, people-focused role that involves working closely with landlords, support providers, and other professionals to drive up housing standards and improve service provision for vulnerable adults. You'll need a good understanding of the support worker role and strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to influence change effectively.

What We're Looking For:
  • Experience in inspecting property standards
  • Knowledge of or exposure to HHSRS (training can be provided)
  • Understanding of the supported housing sector
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence in handling enquiries from elected members and the public
  • Strong problem-solving ability and a focus on achieving results
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced team
  • Access to a vehicle for which car mileage will be payable
